Demographic zombie apocalypse?
Japan is going to feel a lot less crowded after the latest demographic data for 2024 dropped...like a bombshell.
According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, deaths exceeded births by almost a million!!!! While there were 1,618,684 deaths, only 721,000 babies were born, a massive population deficit of 897,684. Deaths were also up by 28,181 on 2023's figures.
The birth figure includes all children born in Japan. In June the Ministry will release the number of babies born to just Japanese nationals. This is expected to fall below 700,000 for the first time ever. The National Institute of Population and Social Security Research had previously predicted that this would not happen until 2038, suggesting that the country's demographic collapse is accelerating.
The causes are believed to be more people choosing to marry later in life, combined with fears over the economic cost of child-rearing due to the higher cost of living.
The only good news is that people getting married was up by 10,718 from 2023 to 499,999.
