A PEACEFUL LUNCH SPOT ALONG THE SPRING WATERS OF KOKUBUNJI
Tucked along the scenic Otaka no Michi in Kokubunji, Ota Cafe serves as a relaxing rest stop amid the lush greenery. Located at 1-13-6 Nishimotomachi, it sits right next to the YÅ«sui-en (spring water garden) — a gentle green spot where clear water bubbles up — and just steps from the Musashi Kokubunji Museum, also known as the Kinenkan "memorial hall."
The café functions as a rest area and information point for visitors exploring the historic Musashi Kokubunji ruins, while also selling entry tickets to the spring water garden and showcasing local Kokubunji produce and specialty products.
From the outside, it appears modest, but inside it is surprisingly spacious. There is plenty of seating, including comfortable chairs and outdoor terrace tables nestled against the wall, creating an open, airy feel. Lush greenery surrounds the space, making it easy to forget you're in Tokyo.
We arrived early for lunch, which was wise — the place quickly filled up with visitors and locals enjoying the peaceful setting. The menu emphasizes Kokubunji's "market garden" vegetables and fruits, with lunch sets built around hearty curries.
Unfortunately, for the purposes of this review, our choice was the same, namely the classic soup curry set (¥1,200), which came with a fresh salad. Other options, which will have to wait until next time to be sampled, included keema curry, onion keema curry, and "salad gohan," a rice bowl piled high with refreshing-looking greens.
À la carte prices are reasonable, with items like cheesecake or iced tea starting around ¥500, while the soup curry runs to about ¥890. We added a Heartland beer (from Kirin) — served in nearly frozen glasses that kept it perfectly crisp and cold.
The soup curry delivered a nice, warming spice that paired beautifully with the fresh salad and rice.
Prices offer excellent value, with most lunch sets and drinks falling in the ¥500–¥1,300 range. The atmosphere encourages you to slow down — whether you're taking a break after strolling the spring water path, visiting the nearby museum, or simply seeking a quiet moment surrounded by nature. Ota Cafe is open from 9:00 to 17:00 (closed Mondays and year-end holidays). It’s the perfect casual spot for a light, flavorful meal in a green, historic corner of western Tokyo. Highly recommended for anyone exploring Kokubunji’s natural and cultural side.
