JAPAN DISCOVERS POWERFUL CANCER-FIGHTING COMPOUND IN COFFEE

Japanese researchers have made an exciting breakthrough: they’ve uncovered how a natural compound in coffee can stop colorectal cancer cells from growing — raising new hope for better cancer prevention and treatment.

The study, led by Motoki Watanabe of Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, focused on caffeic acid, a polyphenol found in coffee. In laboratory tests, caffeic acid dramatically slowed the growth of colorectal cancer cells by binding to a protein called RPS5, which is linked to poor patient outcomes.

By blocking RPS5, caffeic acid halts the cancer cells’ growth cycle and sharply reduces levels of cyclin D1, a protein that fuels cancer cell multiplication. This discovery reveals a clear molecular mechanism that could lead to powerful new therapies.

Watanabe is optimistic that the findings will pave the way for new drugs inspired by caffeic acid or treatments that specifically target RPS5, potentially offering fresh weapons in the fight against colorectal cancer.

While this is still early lab research, it highlights the remarkable potential hidden in everyday coffee and brings renewed hope for more effective ways to prevent and treat cancer in the future. The ground-breaking study was published in the British journal Scientific Reports.
