JAPAN MOVES TOWARDS AN EARTHQUAKE-PROOF FUTURE

Japan is the safest country in the World, except that it's near North Korea, "Typhoon Alley," and the fault line of some very big and restless tectonic plates. But the quest for making Japan a 100% "safety country" goes on, with designers working night and day to make buildings that are not just "earthquake resistant" but which can laugh in the face of the worst earthquakes known to man (possibly even during a typhoon and a North Korean nuclear attack).

The latest in safety innovation is probably the "floating house" concept. There are a number of innovations in this direction, including Air Danshin, a design where an air compressor blows a big cloud of air to lift up the house as soon as a quake is detected.

After a gentle upwards "whoosh" you won't even know there is an earthquake on except for the panicking screams of your less luckier neighbours.

But even better than this is the Maglev House (see picture) that is now being researched by scientists at Fukui University. This will use the same technology as the next generation of
Japan’s bullet trains to electronically levitate homes above the geological turmoil below. Kind of relaxing.
