TOKYO GIG PICKS (MAY 2024)

Baby Metal

With all the cherry blossoms now swept up and dumped in the Pacific, Tokyo can now forget about visual and olfactory entertainment and move onto aural pleasures. So, what's May got in its musical bag? Here is TM's picks for the merry, merry month.

GAMMA RAY

Coming on the tail end of a Latin American tour, Hamburg power metal legends GAMMA RAY will be doing their thing at the 1,7oo-seat Ex Theater Roppongi on 7th May. Their thing, BTW, is a naff but nevertheless awesome version of German medieval peasant music cranked out through a metal band. Price: ¥12,000-14,000 (Ticket info

BILLY CHILDS

There are not that many big names in jazz anymore, but one of the biggest and best is virtuoso piano player BILLY CHILDS who brings his electric quartet to Tokyo Blue Note on the 14th, 15th, and 16th of May. His latest album, "The Winds Of Change," won Best Jazz Instrumental Album at the 66th Grammy Awards. The line-up includes bassist Alphonso Johnson, drummer Justin Brown, and Andrew Renfroe, guitar. Price: 8,800-12,500 (Ticket info)

FOX FEST IN SAITAMA

Assuming they don't change the members behind my back, pretty sure BABY METAL are middle-aged ladies by now. Holding your own music fest is the kind of thing you do when you're getting on a bit, which is why the titans of "kawaii rock" are hosting and headlining this event at Saitama Arena on May 25th and 26th. Other guests include
ELECTRIC CALLBOY, a German metalcore/electronicore band, POLYPHIA, an instrumental prog metal band from Texas, and others to be announced.  Price: 5,500-16,500 (Ticket info)

THE SNUTS

Remember when Indie rock bands were a thing? Well Scotland's THE SNUTS are pretty much part of that deal - a bit earnest, a bit scruffy, a bit striving for that parasocial connection with their insecure audience of skinny Millennials. Oh yeh, did I mention the breathless cracked vocals and fuzzy guitars? Recreate the squalor of youth by going to Kanda Square Hall on the 31st.
Price: 6,800 (Ticket info)
